AI Security Cameras

Cameras that can tell a person
from a passing car.

“AI cameras” sounds like marketing, and often it is. Here’s what the feature actually does on a real site, which cameras genuinely have it, what costs extra — and what it still won’t do.

What people mean by “AI cameras.”

Strip away the marketing and it comes down to one thing: the camera classifies what it sees instead of just detecting that something moved. Older systems trigger on any pixel change — a branch, a shadow, a moth on the lens at 2am — which is why so many people end up switching notifications off entirely. A camera doing classification on its own hardware can say “that was a person” or “that was a vehicle,” and everything useful follows from that.

This is not a service we sell you on top of the cameras. It is a capability built into certain models by Axis, Ubiquiti and Verkada — the brands we already install. Our job is knowing which ones actually have it, which ones make you pay again for it, and whether your site needs it at all.

On Your Site

What it actually does for you.

Tells people from vehicles from animals
The camera itself classifies what it sees, so a person walking your lot and a car pulling in are logged as different things — and a cat, a shadow, or a tree in the wind mostly stops counting as an event at all.
Search instead of scrubbing
The reason this matters at 7am after a break-in: instead of scrubbing eight hours of footage, you filter to “person, back lot, after 10pm” and get a short list. On Verkada you can type it in plain language.
Zones and line crossings
Draw a line across the loading dock or a box around the register, and the camera flags things that cross it — instead of everything that moves anywhere in frame.
Notifications that mean something
Because the camera can classify, the notification it sends you is far more likely to be worth looking at. To be clear about who is looking: that notification goes to you and your staff. We aren’t a monitoring service and nobody here is watching your cameras.
Counting and occupancy
Some models count people or vehicles crossing a line — useful for a retail floor, a yard gate, or a parking count, without a separate system.
Plate reading, on the right hardware
Plate capture is real, but it’s a distinct feature — it needs the right camera, and the right angle and lighting. Whether it costs more depends entirely on the platform: on Axis it’s a separate licensed product, on Verkada it’s covered by the per-camera license you already pay, and on Ubiquiti it’s a question of which camera you buy rather than a license. It also carries California-specific rules about storing plate data, which is worth a conversation with your attorney or insurer before you switch it on.
The Honest Version

Which cameras really have it.

Three brands we install, and what you actually get from each — as each manufacturer publishes it in August 2026. Licensing and model line-ups change, so we confirm the current terms before you buy anything.

Axis
Axis publishes AXIS Object Analytics as preinstalled on compatible Axis cameras at no additional license cost; it classifies people and vehicles on the camera itself. License plate work is a separate Axis product, not part of Object Analytics.
Ubiquiti UniFi Protect
Person, vehicle and animal detection run on the current camera lines. Face and license-plate recognition need an AI or G6 series camera — that is a hardware choice, not a subscription. Ubiquiti publishes no per-camera license fee at all: their own wording is that whether you run 4 cameras or 4,000, licensing is $0. So with Ubiquiti the camera you pick is the decision, and the camera price is the price.
Verkada
Strong search — including plain-language search across your footage — and face search. Worth knowing up front: Verkada sells a per-camera license on top of the hardware, in multi-year terms that have to be renewed, so the camera price is not the whole price. Plate and face features are covered by that license rather than costing extra again.
Limits

What AI cameras won’t do.

It is not a person watching your cameras
This is the big one. AI classification happens on the camera. It does not mean someone is watching, and it does not mean anyone is dispatched. We install and configure systems — we are not a monitoring service and we are not an alarm company.
It is not accurate 100% of the time
Heavy rain, a low sun straight into the lens, headlight glare at night, an odd camera angle — all of it degrades classification. Anyone promising perfect detection is selling you something.
Face and plate features are not automatic
They need specific hardware and deliberate placement, and on some platforms a separate license. They also carry legal considerations in California that a generic camera does not.
It does not fix a badly placed camera
AI cannot classify what the camera cannot see. Coverage, mounting height, angle and lighting still decide whether the footage is usable. That part is still the install.

Smart cameras still need a secure install.

A camera clever enough to recognize a face is still a small computer sitting on your network, shipped with a factory password. The smarter the camera, the more it matters that it is set up properly — credentials changed, cameras on their own segment, and the recorder not exposed to the open internet.

That part is included on every job — here’s how we lock a system down →

FAQ

Straight answers, no jargon.

Usually yes. AI classification runs on the camera itself, so it depends on the model you buy — and on some platforms the advanced features sit behind a separate license. We’ll confirm what a given camera does and what it costs with the manufacturer before you buy it, not after.

No. We install and configure the system; the notifications go to you and your staff. We are not a monitoring service, we don’t staff a control room, and we don’t dispatch anyone. If you want third-party monitoring, we’ll say so plainly rather than imply we provide it.

Sometimes not. If you have four cameras and you rarely pull footage, ordinary recording may be all you need. Where it earns its keep is a site with a lot of activity — a yard, a lot, a shop floor — where finding one clip used to mean an hour of scrubbing. We’ll tell you which one you are.

Often yes, depending on what recorder you have and how it’s wired. We’ll look at what you own during the walkthrough and tell you what can be reused and what genuinely needs replacing.

There are California rules specific to storing and sharing license-plate data that don’t apply to ordinary video. We’ll flag it during design so you can raise it with your attorney or insurer — we install the system, we don’t give legal advice.
