WiFi feels like magic until it doesn’t. And in a business, “it doesn’t” has a cost: stalled card readers, dropped calls, cameras that won’t stream, staff wandering off to find signal.

Dead zones come from a short list of causes — and most have permanent fixes.

The usual suspects

  • Your building. Concrete, brick, metal racking, stucco with wire mesh, even large appliances — WiFi signals weaken fast through all of them. Southern California commercial construction is full of exactly these materials.
  • One router doing everything. A single router covers a radius, not a floor plan. Put it in a front office and the back of the building is on its own.
  • Consumer gear in a commercial space. Home routers are built for a family, not for forty devices, point-of-sale traffic, cameras, and guests at once. They don’t fail loudly — they just get slow and flaky.
  • Interference. Neighboring networks, cordless equipment, and microwaves compete for the same airwaves.
  • Placement. An access point in a closet, behind a monitor, or at the wrong height can slash real-world coverage.

What usually doesn’t fix it

A “stronger” router helps the room it’s in. It doesn’t push signal through three concrete walls, and it can’t hear weak replies from distant devices.

Plug-in extenders rebroadcast a weak signal, halving speed in the process. They’re a patch, and they make networks harder to troubleshoot, not easier.

What reliably works

  • A site survey first. Measure where coverage actually drops, instead of guessing.
  • Wired backhaul. Run cable to where the coverage needs to be, and let each access point serve its own zone at full speed. Clean structured cabling is the backbone of a reliable network.
  • Business-grade access points, placed for your floor plan — ceiling-mounted, centrally located, one per coverage zone.
  • Separate networks for operations and guests, so visitor traffic never competes with your point of sale or cameras.
  • Starlink where the internet itself is the problem — for warehouses, yards, and sites the cable companies don’t reach well.
